49ers Blowout Rams In Beckham, Miller Debuts
The addition of Odell Beckham Jr. to the Los Angeles Rams made everyone dream of the offensive possibilities.
While it’s been a down year statistically for OBJ, most analysts chalked it up to playing in a Browns offense that emphasized running the football with a quarterback who is struggling with injuries. Beckham is only in his eighth year in the NFL, still relatively young in football years.
We got our first look at Beckham in a Rams uniform Monday night, and it certainly wasn’t the offensive explosion some had hoped for.
The San Francisco 49ers jumped on the Rams early, picking off Matthew Stafford on LA’s first two possessions, cruising to a 31-10 win in Santa Clara, California.
Following a Jimmie Ward interception on the Rams first possession — Beckham was the intended receiver — Jimmy Garoppolo and the 49ers offense went on an 18-play, 93-yard drive capped off by an eight-yard touchdown catch for George Kittle. The 49ers ran the ball 13 times on the drive, a game plan that was established going into the game.
“It got us into a rhythm for sure,” Garoppolo said. “That’s the way we want to do it. Just running the ball, converting on third down and then score at the end. I don’t want to say it took their soul away but it definitely did something.”
San Francisco ran the ball 44 times on the night for 156 yards, allowing Garoppolo to be a game manager, completing 15 of his 19 pass attempts.
“If you want to establish any type of dominance, especially in the trenches, I think that is necessary,” left tackle Trent Williams said. “You got to run the ball and got to make your opponents respect it.”
San Francisco quickly went up 14-0 on Stafford’s second interception — Ward’s second interception of the game — when Stafford’s pass went through the hands of tight end Tyler Higbee.
“This was a humbling night for us as a team, and a great opportunity for us to be able to take a deep breath, step away, look at the things that we need to correct, particularly offensively over the last couple of weeks,” coach Sean McVay said.
Beckham only signed with the Rams on Thursday, and played on just 27% of LA’s offensive plays — 15 total snaps — and was targeted just three times on the night. He finished with two catches for 18 yards.
“They played better than us in all
