The Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office is expected to release further details about the deceased victims. However, due to inclement weather and concerns for the safety of investigators, operations were temporarily suspended on Saturday night. Crews are set to resume their work at the site on Sunday morning.
Emergency responders reported that individuals were trapped under debris, with one house exploding and two others being engulfed in flames. Fire departments from 18 different locations collaborated with water tankers from Allegheny and Westmoreland counties to combat the raging inferno.
As authorities continue their investigation, it remains unclear who was present in the affected homes at the time of the explosion. This uncertainty makes it challenging to determine the exact number of missing individuals.
The cause of the explosion is currently under scrutiny by Plum and county law enforcement, as well as the county fire marshal’s office. The state public utilities commission and local utilities are also involved in the investigation.
Witnesses shared their harrowing experiences, with George Emanuele recounting how he and a neighbor discovered a man lying in the backyard of the exploded home. They managed to drag him to safety before the fire escalated. Another resident, Rafal Kolankowski, described how the blast shattered the windows of his house, causing him and his wife to be thrown to the ground.
Mr. Kolankowski further revealed that a woman informed him about another woman who was trapped upstairs and a man who remained in the basement. While the woman upstairs eventually emerged covered in ash, the man in the basement had yet to escape.
“It’s just tragic, I mean, it looks like a war zone—it looks like a bomb hit our neighborhood and it’s just unfortunate,” expressed Mr. Kolankowski.
