22 dead in mountain cloudburst aftermath.
Heavy Monsoon Rains Trigger Deadly Floods and Landslides in India’s Himalayan Region
Devastating monsoon rains have caused widespread destruction in India’s Himalayan region, claiming the lives of at least 22 people and leaving many others trapped, according to officials. The torrential downpours triggered a cloudburst in Himachal Pradesh state’s Solan district, resulting in the deaths of nine individuals. In Shimla, the state’s capital, two landslides claimed the lives of nine more people who were buried under mud and debris. Additionally, four individuals lost their lives in heavy rains and a landslide in Hamirpur district.

The state’s chief minister, Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, has stated that rescue operations are underway in Shimla to clear debris and assist those still trapped. Cloudbursts, which occur when more than 3.9 inches of rain falls within 3.8 square miles in an hour, are a common phenomenon in the Himalayan region and can lead to severe flooding and landslides.

Homes in Solan have been washed away and roads have been flooded due to the incessant rains. In Shimla, the landslides have even caused the collapse of a Hindu temple. Authorities fear that the death toll may rise as they continue their efforts to rescue those who are still trapped.

As a result of the calamity, all schools and colleges in the state have been closed, and more than 700 roads have been rendered impassable. India’s weather department has issued a warning of moderate to heavy rainfall in various parts of the state on Monday. A red alert had already been issued over the weekend for intense downpours in Uttarakhand state, where 60 people have lost their lives in monsoon rains this season.
In July, record-breaking monsoon showers claimed over 100 lives in northern India, with Himachal Pradesh being the hardest hit. Landslides and floods are common disasters during the monsoon season in India’s Himalayan north, which lasts from June to September. Last year, flash floods resulted in the deaths of nearly 200 people and the destruction of numerous houses in Uttarakhand.
