2024 GOP Candidate Withdraws from Presidential Race Ahead of Last Debate
North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum Ends Presidential Campaign
The longshot candidate, North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum, has officially ended his campaign for the Republican presidential nomination. Despite gaining little traction in the race, Burgum’s unique gift card-for-campaign-donation gimmick helped him secure a spot on the debate stage.
Burgum, a second-term governor and successful software entrepreneur, was relatively unknown on the national stage when he launched his 2024 presidential campaign in June. He emphasized his priorities of energy, the economy, and national security, as well as his small-town roots and leadership in the sparsely populated state.
To meet the donor requirements set by the Republican National Committee, Burgum offered $20 Biden Relief Cards in exchange for $1 donations. This tactic, which took a jab at President Joe Biden’s handling of inflation, raised some legal concerns. However, Burgum’s campaign assured that their legal advisers had reviewed and approved the method.
Although Burgum participated in the first two Republican debates, he failed to qualify for the third debate due to falling short on polling requirements. It seemed unlikely that he would qualify for the fourth debate as well.
According to the latest RealClearPolitics polling averages, Burgum is tied with former Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson for seventh place in the GOP primary race, with only 0.6 percent support. The frontrunners include former President Donald Trump, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, and former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley.
Burgum criticized the RNC for “nationalizing the primary process” and limiting competition, stating that their debate criteria favored candidates from major media markets on the coasts rather than those from America’s Heartland.
We launched our campaign with a clear-eyed mission: Bring a business leader and proven governor’s voice to fight for the best of America. We will always remain committed to fighting for that, and for the people who make our nation so exceptional. pic.twitter.com/ugSM7SysxS

Ultimately, Burgum struggled to gain momentum against his rivals, particularly in a contest dominated by Trump. He now joins several other candidates, including Senator Tim Scott and former Vice President Mike Pence, in suspending his bid.
Burgum invested millions of his own money into the campaign, accounting for the majority of the funds raised. Additionally, a super PAC supporting his bid raised over $11 million in the first half of this year.
Despite facing challenges, such as a ruptured Achilles tendon just before the inaugural debate, Burgum persevered and continued campaigning. He entered politics as a newcomer in 2016, winning the Republican gubernatorial primary in North Dakota. As governor, he focused on reinventing state government and championed initiatives such as a Theodore Roosevelt presidential library and income tax relief.
Before his political career, Burgum made a name for himself as a successful businessman, leading Great Plains Software, which was later acquired by Microsoft. He has also been involved in real estate development and venture capital.
While Burgum’s presidential campaign may have come to an end, his commitment to fighting for the best of America remains unwavering.

In his official statement on Twitter, Burgum acknowledged the challenges his campaign faced but remained committed to fighting for the best of America. He expressed gratitude towards his supporters and vowed to continue advocating for the people who make the nation exceptional.
With Burgum dropping out of the race, the Republican primary field becomes more concentrated around the frontrunners. While his unique campaign strategy brought him some attention, his departure indicates the difficulty of gaining significant traction in a crowded and competitive field.
As the 2024 presidential race progresses, the remaining candidates will continue to push their agendas and vie for support from Republican voters. Burgum’s decision to end his campaign highlights the challenging nature of running for the highest office in the land and the tough choices that must be made along the way.
