A fire rescue helicopter crashed into an apartment complex in Florida, resulting in the tragic loss of two lives.
Following the crash of a Broward Sheriff’s Office Fire Rescue helicopter into an apartment building on Monday, an air rescue flight paramedic and a resident lost their lives, while four others sustained injuries.
According to Federal Aviation Administration officials, the helicopter had three crew members on board when it went down around 8:45 a.m. in the vicinity of North Dixie Highway and Atlantic Boulevard, southwest of the Pompano Beach Airpark.
A witness captured footage on their cell phone, showing smoke and flames engulfing the helicopter before it spiraled downward, with its tail visibly damaged and disintegrating.
“On top of the roof was all fire, a big ball of fire, that’s all, and then like I said a second explosion,” witness Ruben Chavez said. “We felt the heat, so that’s when we said ‘okay, we’ve got to go.’”
Aerial helicopter footage reveals the extensive damage caused to the apartment building complex as a result of the crash.
Officials have stated that the fire rescue helicopter was en route to a scene in North Lauderdale at the time of the accident.
Among the three individuals on board the helicopter, one lost their life. The deceased has been identified as Broward Sheriff’s Office Captain Terryson Jackson, a 50-year-old veteran of the agency.
The second fatality was an adult woman residing in the building, whose identity has not been disclosed.
The two firefighters who survived the crash managed to escape the wreckage and were transported to the hospital, along with two other affected residents.
